Use the $$$ you save to help others!

All of the money you save from cutting coupons and watching for deals on blogs  can be put to good use (other than in your savings account) by helping others locally and globally. As a teacher, I understand how important it is for a child to have his or her own school supplies. It gives them more confidence and helps them to be self-sufficient during the school day. Many of the younger children feel great pride when they are able to hand their teacher the supplies from her list. Here are some places around Houston that are taking donations this back-to-school season.

YMCA Operation Backpack: Purchase a new backpack (or get one for free after MaxPerks at OfficeMax). Fill it with the recommended supplies from the website. Write a note of encouragement to put in the backpack. Drop of the backpack at a Greater Houston area YMCA by August 15th. Smile. You helped a child.

Undies for Everyone: Donate unused underwear and socks for children in the Houston area, so they can have a "fresh start" this school year. Click the link to find drop-off locations.

School Supply drive Ecclesia Houston: My church is a drop off location for school supplies that will go to local Iraqi refugee children. Address: 2115 Taft St. Houston, TX 713-622-1846

Please let me about donation drives through your organization or church by leaving all pertinent information in the comment section of this post.

UPDATE: I purchased two backpacks yesterday. One from OfficeMax, which was free with MaxPoints and one from Ross for $4.99. The best place to find cheap supplies close by is Walgreen's. I'm itching to get to Wal-Mart, but we'll see if I make it out there today!
